Types of leave in Nicaragua

Paid Time Off

Nicaraguan employees are entitled to 30 calendar days of paid leave after an entire year of employment. Workers who have been employed for up to six months but less than a year are entitled to 15 days off.

Sick Leave

Sick leave in Nicaragua lasts 26 weeks, with the first three days going unpaid. Starting on the 4th day of an illness, ailing employees draw a sickness benefit equal to 60% of their normal wages. If an employee is hospitalised, the three-day waiting period is waived and they can sart receiving sickness benefits from the first day of illness.

Maternity Leave

Expectant mothers are entitled to 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, starting four weeks before the expected due date. The leave entitlement increases to 14 weeks if the mother delivers twins.Employers are required to pay 40% of the mother’s normal wages as a maternity benefit while social security covers the remaining 60%.

Fathers are entitled to five business days of paid leave.
